For Coaches

Coach Information

Everything volunteer and club coaches need to get registered, certified, and ready for the season.

Getting Registered

  • Parent-coaches: select "Head Coach" in the volunteer options during player registration in Playmetrics.
  • Non-parent coaches: email recreationaladmin@gbysl.org to express interest — GBYSL staff will create a GotSport coach profile for you.
  • Register in GotSport → and complete SafeSport Training (free), submit a Background Check (fee required), and complete Annual Certification.
  • SafeSport must be renewed every year — refresher courses in years 2+ are shorter than the year-1 course.

Scheduling & Logistics

Practice fields open up two to three weeks before the first game (weather and city/county permitting). To change a practice schedule, email recreationaladmin@gbysl.org.

Need to reschedule a game? Coordinate with the opposing coach first, then contact recreationalcheduler@gbysl.org to arrange a new field and referees.

Uniforms, photos, and medals are released to a team representative only — watch for an email when they're ready for pickup.

Build-Out Line Rule (U9 & U10)

  • Encourages U9/U10 teams to build out of the back rather than punting long.
  • When the goalkeeper has the ball, the opposing team must retreat behind the build-out line until the ball is released and crosses the penalty area.
  • The keeper may pass, throw, or roll the ball — punts and drop kicks are not allowed.
  • On goal kicks, the ball must cross the penalty area before the opposing team can cross the build-out line.
  • Offside: the build-out line — not the halfway line — is used to determine offside.
For Parents

Parent Information & Conduct

What to know before your first season — registration, team placement, equipment, and sideline expectations.

Seasons & Registration

GBYSL Recreational runs two seasons a year: Spring (March/April–June) and Fall (August–October). The registration fee covers field fees (paid to Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County), player registration (paid to US Club), uniform, team photo, and a medal.

Team Placement

  • Teams are formed by zip code. If there aren't enough players in your zip code, you'll be placed at the nearest one.
  • U4–U7 teams are co-ed; U8 and up are gender-specific (girls may still play on a boys team).
  • Players may request to play one age division up — requires a waiver: 10 & under or 11 & over.

Game Day Basics

Practices are set by your coach; games are scheduled by the league, typically Saturdays with some midweek games for U8–U14. Cleats and shin guards (worn under the sock) are required at every practice and game — families purchase these themselves. Uniforms are distributed by your coach.

Parent Code of Conduct

  1. Be positive and supportive. Keep negative comments to yourself, especially about another parent's child.
  2. Let the coaches coach. Sideline instructions often contradict the coach and undermine player communication.
  3. Never address players on the other team, except to encourage them.
  4. Treat officials with respect — they're human, and they're volunteers too.
  5. No game-related discussions with opposing-team parents. We want to be known as a league with class, win or lose.
  6. Leave the game on the field once it's over.
  7. Keep it fun. Players play because they love the game — let that stay the point.

GBYSL has zero tolerance for verbal abuse of referees or players, by coaches or parents.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to what new and returning families ask most.

How much does it cost, and what's included?

$175 covers 8–10 weeks of practice, 7 games, a uniform, a medal, and a team/individual photo. Late registrations are $225.

How are teams formed?

By the zip code submitted at registration. If there aren't enough players in your zip code, you'll be grouped with the nearest one.

When and where will practices be held?

Coaches are volunteers and choose practice day, time, and location, usually starting about two weeks before games begin. Your coach will email team practice details directly.

What if my team doesn't have a coach yet?

We make every effort to recruit a parent volunteer. If we can't find one, we may pull from an affiliated club, move your child to a nearby team, or offer a refund — this is rare.

What's the refund policy?

No refunds are issued unless registration insurance was purchased at signup.

Where's the GBYSL office, exactly?

5301 Longley Lane, Building A, Suite 5 — across from The Fitness Connection gym, next door to George and Sons Garage Doors. There's no signage on our building, so look for theirs.

I haven't heard from my coach yet — when will I be contacted?

Coaches reach out once they've secured a practice field and time. If you're within two weeks of the season starting and still haven't heard anything, contact the GBYSL office directly.

Game Instructions & Rules

Format, timing, and rules by age division — plus the common rules every team follows.

Common Rules — All Age Groups

  • No jewelry or metal pins of any kind, including taped-over jewelry (FIFA Law 4, no exceptions).
  • Soccer cleats (not baseball cleats) or running shoes, plus shin guards worn under the sock.
  • Parents sit on the sideline opposite their team.
  • No dogs on the fields (City of Reno rule). Please use the trash receptacles around the fields.

U9 / U107v7 with goalkeeper + build-out line2 × 25-min halvesSize 4Not allowed
U11 / U129v9 with goalkeeper2 × 30-min halvesSize 4Allowed

U4–U8 play kick-ins only (no throw-ins) and may score directly off kickoffs. U9 and up add throw-ins, penalty kicks, and offside law. See the Build-Out Line Rule above for U9/U10 specifics, or view the full Recreational Standards (PDF) →.

U7 & Under

AirPitches

U7 and younger games are played inside AirPitch inflatable boundary systems — already used by clubs like Manchester City and Arsenal for small-sided development.

Why It Works

3v3 small-sided play inside the AirPitch boundary keeps the ball in play almost the entire game, dramatically increasing each player's touches and accelerating development.

  • 83% ball-rolling time per game
  • 102 touches per player, per game
  • 2,300 steps per game

"The benefit to training in smaller spaces is you don't give players time to think... every single action is completely different. That's the key." — Pep Guardiola
